I think that most people for all practical purposes stick to one general meaning, which is that of striking something or somebody very lightly with the fingers. I tap you on the shoulder, or I tap out a rhythm to the music. There is such a thing as tap dancing, in which it is your shoes which beat the ground rhythmically. My sons tap me for money occasionally, but that is slang and so I would not recommend that use of the word!

I looked up the word and can assure you that all other possible meanings are extremely scientific and that if ever you need to know them, you can learn them as and where necessary.

English is my first language and a lot of the ways the verb is pronounced I have never even heard.

95% of the time, 'tap' is used to express a light touching (ie. to tap someones shoulder)
