A handfasting is where the couple's hands are bound or draped with a particular rope or ribbon.
Sometimes I have brides choose the colors of the ribbons ( as they signify certain things, e.g. red=passion, blue=serenity) and then make a 4 chord braid to use.
There are Wiccan, Pagan, Celtic & even Christian handfastings. Each ceremony is slightly different. Talk to your officiant to see if they will do this.

I've never done this myself, although I have witnessed several. The ones I've seen were done at Renn. faires, usually after hours, as a private ceremony with the household the couple (or one of them) belonged to. It was actually really cool to watch these ceremonies, they happened after dark, with just candles and torches around, it was just really moving. Other than that, I'm not terribly familiar with the tradition. I'm guessing, you'd have to find a person who knows what the heck "handfasting" is; people who performed the handfastings I've seen seemed to know what they were doing. Congrats.

My husband and I had a handfasting ceremony when we got married. I researched it one the internet and wrote our own based on several that I found. It was really beautiful and had so much meaning to both of us.
You can find a lot of good info and ideas on the web. I am sure that you will find something that you like.
For the rope, I went to the fabric store and got braided silk cord in the colors that I used. I framed them in a shadow box with a nice satin background and they are great!
Good luck to you.

I agree with SirenSong's recommendations. Typically they are done at Renaissance festivals or with a medieval theme. But that is not a requirement.
