Cretins in other states who know nothing should keep their ignorance to themselves. Most guns that are available anywhere else are available in CA with some big exceptions.
Besically, no modern firearms of 50 cal or greater. You can still buy shotguns, even rifled ones (.729" rifles, effectively), and black powder guns of all sorts. Everyone had seen The Kentukyan and didn't believe a black powder weapon was a credible threat to the boys in blue.
You can buy any pistol that passes the hammer drop test and has a magazine capacity of ten or less. A lot of manufacturers didn't bother to submit their perfectly adequate firearms for testing because they are just plain sick of the BS, included in that list was TC Arms which has an entirely safe transfer bar action but just didn't want to sell to an idiot state.
No assault weapons, that's nothing with a removeable magazine and one of: pistol grip, bayonet lug, flash supressor, collapsable stock.
No night sights (not firearms but related).
No full auto weapons.
So what does all this mean?
No 'assault' weapons, though you can buy a Kel-Tec SU16CA which takes M16 magazines (which you also can't buy or transfer if they have a capacity over 10 though you can still own the ones you already had, you can also fix them when they break) and works at least as well. You can also buy "off list" lowers: CA was dumb enough to specify the exact models of 'assault weapon' receivers that it banned, so new manufacturers made new models that aren't banned because they aren't on the list, so you can buy a Stag lower receiver for an AR-15 and so long as you assemble it with a fixed 10 round or less magazine before you assemble it you can still build an AR-15. Stag didn't exist when the AWB was written. If you go out of state you can remove the 10 round magazine, add your cop killer flash supressor and bayonette lug, and revert to normal opperation. There are TENS OF THOUSANDS of off list lowers in California, we are waiting to see what the CA DoJ decides to do since they drive a horse and cart through the AWB.
What does it mean to public safety, the reason always given for these things? Absolutely nothing, criminals can buy what they like from their usual illegal sources and are undeterred by changes in the law which only affect normal people. Oakland had about 150 killings last year and most were with illegally held firearms. Law abiding gun owners seldom shoot anyone, so further restricting them doesn't do anything useful.
It is a mistake to think that CA is universally anti-gun, by land area the majority issues concealed carry permits. Some counties are essentially "shall issue" and the permits count for the whole state. I know both Sherrif candidates in one mountain county were of the opinion that their law abiding public should have access to concealed weapons. My friend's parents carry concealed and were berrated by an SFPD officer for not loading their weapons when he returned them after they had been in a public building.
The Barrett thing was interesting. He was there when they were demonizing his weapons and the cops handed one to a politician, he took the view that that was illegal since it was a semi-auto with a pistol grip and detachable magazine and therefore an assault weapon and therefore restricted to LEOs and military and that they had therefore broken the law by giving it to a civillian. So he decided not to work with LAPD any more because they weren't law abiding. I don't know if he has stood his ground on that one.
Aha! Here's a list, it doesn't make much sense though, it looks like they cut and pasted "Exceptions" and what in God's name is a "sniperscope" other than something they talk about in non-gun-savy films and Stephen King (knows zero about guns) books.

California sucks for just about any hunting or shooting sport. In California one of the more recent bans was of the 50cal rifles. And in turn the biggest selling manufacture of the 50cal (Barret) stop selling there "weapons" to law enforcement. packing.org is a good site for carry and gun purchase laws of all state information.

The State Attorney Generals office should be able to provide you with a pamphlet or printout of the laws particular to California.
They stink, I assure you.
My condolances.

That's easy, none. All the little socialist, leftist, communists you people elect to office have deballed your second amendment rights. Proof, Diane Feinstein wants to ban all handguns because their dangerous.....I guess that's why she has a permit to carry a concealed weapon...Her life, obviously, is worth more than yours.
