Sometimes they think of possibly bringing back the draft, and they talk about how they are low on troops. Could training inmates work? Like put on a tracking device so if they try to run, we can find them.

*my mom brought this up earlier tonight...and i was seeing if it could ever work*

after reading some of the answers to this good question and see how stupid some are , and how little they know , did you know there are people in prison for peeing on a interstate hwy, and they were not being indecent, just couldn't hold it any longer, or a open can of beer in a fed park, and to many stupid charges to mention here, contrary to the guy who said he was in the military for 20years,, I do question that , as I was in the marine corps for 26 years, and I do know they took many people out of prison during WW2 and Korea to serve in the military, of course the prisoner had to agree to this also, and several ended up highly decorated, of course some died, one was given the congressional medal of honer, there has been over 60.000 new laws placed on our law books in the last 50 years, things that no one would be arrested for or even in most cases condemned for people are serving long sentences for today, and when our courts have a 98,8 %conviction ratio, it is small wonder that every one is not locked up, our courts are not just any more, there is no justice in our courts, and our news media and some ignorant people are still hollering for more laws and more time for the offenders , that is until they get caugth up in one of the traps, then they holler I didn't know this was illegal or I didn't think it involved me as they always think they are some how above the law, there are many many good honest and intelligent people in prison. matter of fact some of the smartest people in this country is in prison or have been, so don't buy this B,S,people in prison is stupid uneducated scum. and yes enlisting some of these men would be a very viable answer to what you ask if you can get the prison officals or our law makers to do so , but, since it is so profitable for a select few it is doubtful it will ever happen

Do you think that the military is just a bunch of crazy trained killers or something? There are actually standards for joining the military. Like to join the Army you have to have a GED or diploma, not be a single parent, never been in a federal prison, pass an aptitude test, etc... I have been in the Army for 20 years. We want disciplined and intelligent people for the military...not undisciplined hooligans you might find in a jail. There are lots of skilled engineers, electricians, pilots, etc... in the military. It's totally different from "The Boys Club" or the "Cub Scouts"

There was a movie abou8t this same thing called "The Dirty Dozen"; good movie but not realistic in retrospect.

A BIG part of SERVICE is disciple, honor and covering someone's back when it gets tough. I just do not think that many prisoners are capable of the training necessary; too much baggage.

If they have done the crime, let them do the time!

There have been several instances where a first offender has been given the choice of Military Service or jail and I think it may be a good option in some circumstances.

Well they have tried that in the pass and it may still be happening. It brings a criminals mind or way of thinking it a group of people that need work together as a family. Also would you want these criminals to be the face of the US? I mean these are people can not fallow the US's code of conduct how likely would they to fallow the armed forced code of conduct (UCMJ) or anther country's code of conduct? It take a certain type of person to be in the armed forces. it's not just hold gun and shooting anything that moves. when you are in the armed forces you not longer are a person but a peace of gov't property. You do as they say when they for how long they say it will be done. be sides the some of the food the is sent to some US Navy ships are even labeled not meant for human consummation. human rights people would have a hay day with that alone. How about we stop looking for band-adds for our wounds and start looking at how to stop the bleeding so we don't need as many band-adds.

many people who commit crimes don't have a lot of respect for authority or the law, therefore making them unlikely soldiers.

also, it's kind of an unfair sentence, drafting prisoners is basically sentencing them to death (they may NOT die, but they may), and being forced to go to a war zone for shoplifting or stealing a car seems a bit drastic. war is a touchy subject, and very emotionally and psychologically draining, NO ONE should have to fight in one, but you especially shouldn't be forced to, inmate or not. inmates who have committed serious crimes (murder, rape) are usually already mentally unstable, and if they made it back from the war, they would be an even greater threat to society with the added psychological baggage.

maybe it could work as an OPTION--reduce your sentence if you join the military (and have good behavior in jail, mentally stable, etc), but they would have to go through training and all of that, which takes time.

I sure wouldn't want to be the one to lead them into battle.

One sheriff in Arizona has inmates sleeping in tents and wearing pink jumpsuits. I like that idea and see nothing wrong with it. As a matter of fact, I think its a little mild.

Rent them out to farmers or others who need cheap labor and would normally hire illegals. Put half the earnings towards their upkeep and the other half into a savings account for when they are released. It isn't slavery, it isn't cruel and it won't hurt them. On the other hand it will help defray the cost of incarcerating them, it gives them some money to get started back in life when they get out and it burns off some energy for them. And, to tell you the truth, spending 5-6 years chained to a group of other guys picking vegetables might discourage recidivism.

I agree absolutely........ however so much will simplest believe of getting a laugh and no longer even deliver a nod to..... individuals who fought and died. Yes persons will have to take a second to take action. But something is that the yank persons don't need to consciousness on struggle and are loose to be a bit of oblivious. They are competent to reside their lives no longer taking to middle that there are persons who make it feasible daily and in every single place. Those who make this feasible simply recognise....... its typically rough. One are not able to speak approximately so much and give an explanation for to others. But you already know to your middle. When at a BBQ at the 4th you sit down and recognize.

If they did join they wouldn't be learning there lesson and thats why they are in prison in the 1st place. . they would somewhat be rewarded by joining and going to iraq . just think of the murderers and serial killers.. they would have freedom and we would be supplying them with weapons. not a smart idea. maybe inmates imprisoned on different terms would make good candidates. like tha idiots locked up on 3rd felony for slangin lol

conscripts have never been very powerful militarily, they're pretty much disorganized and not the best caliber people. They also run the risk of continuing criminal activity in your military. and in the case of a political war trying to win the hearts and minds you don't want aggressive or ill mannered soldiers going around scareing intimidating or terrorizing the general populace.

You and your mom both are totally clueless about the military.

The Military isnt just a bunch of trained killers. If they were, then yes, forcing prisoners to join the military would be a good idea.

The Military is made up of ordinary men and women. your friend, your neighbor, brother, sister, husband, wife, mother, father. Son, and daughter.
The only difference between them and other "civilian" sons, daughters, etc... is that they joined up to serve and defend the United states and the ideals of freedom that America stands for.
Yes we have to learn how to kill in order to do so because sometimes thats what it takes. Every soldier I know of would rather be bringing humanitarian aid to poor Iraqi people rather than shooting and killing insurgents. but you sometimes when the other guys dont play nice you just have to kill them or be killed.

With rare exceptions (and those exceptions are punished as soon as they are identified) Our soldier fight and serve with honor, integrity, and compassion.

Let me make sure I understand you...
You want to put thugs, murderers, druggies and rapists. and trust them, the scum of society, to protect your freedoms and way of life!?!?!?!

are you F'ing NUTS!?!?!

A Free, all volunteer Military is one of our greatest strengths.

Back during Vietnam, not only was there a draft but we had criminals given the choice to serve or go to jail. The result: Drug use was rampant and moral was in the toilet. crime and alcohol abuse was horrible.

Please think about what you are suggesting. just a tiny tiny bit of common sense would help.

We men and women who wear the uniform deserve your respect. not your ridicule.
We don't ask for it. We also defend your right to call us babykillers and worse.
We dont ask for your respect but we damn well deserve it.

UPDATE: Brown Eyed Girl, Sorry If I am a bit harsh but the topic of sending prisoners to fight in Military has been done to death and the people who keep bringing it up do seem clueless about the military. I thank those of your family who have served.
As much family as you have in the military you should have known better than to even think about the question you posed.

Let me put it this way. You have two choices about who will go with your Boyfriend to Iraq. To watch his back. to protect him as he protects them.
Choice 1: A bunch of murderers and rapists, Chid molesters and thugs.

Choice 2: Men much like your Boyfriend, Cousin, Grandfather, and other family and friends.

I Rest my case.
