If you drink enough to lose control-can't walk or talk properly it is too much. If you wake up the next day with a hangover it was too much. If you wake up and don't have any memory of parts of the evening before, it was way too much. If you have to call in to work because the drinking made you too sick to work, it was too much. If you wake up the next day and need another drink to start the day, you have been drinking too much for a long time. The amount you can drink in an evening depends on your tolerance, if you have food in your stomach before drinking, and what you are drinking. The term is moderation in all things.

A lot depends on how much you weigh. My benchmark is if my nose starts to go numb I've had enough. A few words to the wise if you want to avoid that hangover:
Make your last 3 drinks of the night plain ol' water
Be sure to eat something before you go to bed-breakfast of potatoes, toast and eggs is good. It will coat your stomach and absorb some alcohol plus give your body some protein to work with while you're asleep.
And speaking of sleep, get some! At least 8 hrs!
Stay away from tobacco! It will give you a hangover even if you haven't had a drop.

Drink all you want , slosh your self out if you so desire , but none if you are going to drive , because is not only your life at the steering weal of a car , is the life of a child , a mother a father on his way home , you will have in your hands the responsibility of some one else's entire life , for just a mere drink and drive .

Depending on ones body weight one drink per hour is enough to keep you below the legal limit for being intoxicated while driving. Other than that I would say that it is personal preference as to how drunk you like being.

Scientifically it has to do with your body mass.. i.e. height and weight. True some can seem to put more away than others but when it comes down to it, it is what ever feels comfortable to you without hurting or being a burden to others

It all depends on your tolerance, and what you are drinking. After you hit your buzz, I say take it slow, try to keep that buzz, and don't push yourself past that, you will generally make a fool of yourself.
