I'm not so sure either are terribly important.
"God" (or Allah, or Shiva, or Elvis, or FSM) is a very personal belief.
"Country" tends to divide and create bigotry against anyone who is not part of it.
Synonymous? Hardly. Are you suggesting worshiping the country? Not wise.
