First, lean forward (don't tilt the head backward). This does not stop the bleeding, but prevents him to aspirate the blood. Apply pressure by pinching the bridge of the nose. this may help clotting. Applying ice packs may also help by constricting the blood vessels on the area.

A nosebleed that lasts longer than 10 minutes or doesn't stop with the usual procedures (such has tilting the head forward and pinching the bridge of the nose) should be seen by a doctor. It's possible that a capillary in the sinus cavity has ruptured and will need to be cauterized. This can happen when the air is extremely dry, usually during the winter and/or in an overheated environment.

The older the person, the more dangerous a nosebleed can be. There could be clotting problems or other factors contributing to this including medications one might be taking.
Stopping a nosebleed can be as simple as pinching the soft fleshy part of the nose for up to 5 minutes. This will assist clotting.

I can tell you the old home remedy that works best for me when I get them. Take a peice of paper grocery bag and fold it up into a small rectangle. Wet it under the faucet, then stick it under the upper lip where it will be putting pressure on the top gum right where it meets the bottom of the nasal cavity. Has worked like a charm for me for years, even after going to the doctor and having it caterized (spelling?) and all that stuff.

This may sound weird but if you have a severe nose bleed the best thing to use is an OB tampon. All you have to do is stick a regular OB tampon up the nose.

pinch at the bridge of the nose and head should be down, years ago they said your head should be back but it can cause you to choke on a blood clot. also try ice on the bridge of the nose too
