When I turn 19, I will loose my Medicaid. I have been very sick for the past year, and still have one more surgery and I have to go to the hospital every other week. I am applying for disability, just for the medical insurance, but in case I don't get it, what about welfare? What exactally is it and how do you apply for it?

Please don't write telling me to get a job. I would if I could. I have always had a job, and the only reason I am asking about this is b/c I have to have medical insurance. Can you provide a website also?

Thank you!
Sarah

**No I am not trying to work the system. I have had over 10 surgeries and I am on Medicaid, so do you think my mom can help me? I will always have this auto-immune system disease, so it isn't something like being pregnant. I am in and out of the hospital, so "Curious", if you can find me a job that is very flexible, then let me know. I am only 18, and have worked since I was 15. Yeah...I sound very lazy.

Thanks for the first answer!! I found what I was looking for! :)

I would suggest that you start with the dept of employment. They have special counselors that deal with people who have serious health issues. They can refer you to all of the resources that are out there for you. My ex-father-in-law was blind, and he worked for the braille institute. Anytime that he was not feeling well, it was not a problem for him not to come to work.

If you would just like to get help with your financially issues then go to the Department of Welfare. They will have you to bring in all of your medical records so they can evaluate your case. Then they will have someone to call you and ask more questions. Then they will send you to one of their doctors at a health clinic or county hospital to get into the system.

Some people turn their nose up at the county health system, but they have the latest treatments and technology.

Go to the Department of Health And Human Services in your state. It may have a slightly different name..
Anyway, look in the yellow pages under government or on the internet. Every state has their own bureacracy but I'm sure everything is slightly similar since welfare is regulated by the federal government.
I filled out a form about my income and wealth. Every type of welfare had a subsection on the form. I signed up for everything but only got food stamps. I, unlike you however, do not have expensve medical bills.

Just cuz you get sick easily or are going through a time of surgury doesn't mean you can't work. Woman who are pregant & just had a cecerian & a baby work before & after & during (they're just on a leave of absence). I had surgery & worked before & after (and again took a leave of absence during). Just cuz of your hard time does not give you an excuse to not work. And just cuz you're having surgery does not make you eligible for diability. Sounds like you may be tring to work the system & give yourself & others an excuse to be lazy.

Get a job, try to get insurance through your work, & go to your local health dept & see if they can get you on some kind of medical card. Most doctors will also accept payments, so that will help you pay as well. Aren't you on your parents insurance? Won't your parents pay for it - or at least help you pay?
