I have 3 pom puppies about 5 wks old. They are doing really well on puppy mush. How do I introduce dry food? If I just put it out, is that okay or should I mix it with something? I put a plate of dry food for them today and they seemed to like it and eat it with no problems. Was I wrong to do that? I dont want anything to happen to them just because I dont know any better. Thanks.

You soak it, and each day soak it for shorter times until they are eating it hard. Just try a little hard kibble and see what they do with it.

Once the puppies have big enough teeth , try to give them some puppy chow mixed with a little water.Let it get a little soggy, but not too soggy or else they wont get used to the hard food. Once they get used to it then try giving them puppy chow without water. Then when they lose all their baby teeth give them dog chow like Ol' Roy .
Try to stay away from Kibbles and bits. Thats about the same thing as you eating nothing but pizza all the time. Don't be afraid to change foods every once in a while. I think that I would get tired of the same taste all the time. If that food gives them tummy aches then keep them on something that you know wont give them tummy aches.

It's ok that you fed them the dry food. But to get them started on the dry food. It is good to still serve them the puppy mush mixed with the dry food. So they can get the feel of it.And also keep putting a little extra more of dry food everytime.

There are many questions I have about this. Why are 5 week old pups not with their mother? If something happened to her I am very sorry.

But about the food, please keep close contact with your Vet. It is never recommended to change any dog's food suddenly. Always a gradual change is best. Watch for signs of diarrea and such when changing food.

Again, I reitterate, consult closely with a good vet.

To introduce hard food, you need to mix it with soft food little by little increaing the dry food and decreasing the wet food. You should do this whenever changing any kind of food, even brands.

You have several ways to find the answers you seek!
You can web search for that type of dog and see what you come up with, or you could call your local vet and ask for some advice on your particular breed of puppy. And you can always go to your local library and try some of the books on your breed of dog.

You need to be feeding them very small kibble. I but Nutro Ultra puppy food. Its kibble is very small and my 5 weeks old pups have been eating it for a week, even one tiny little girl. The Nutro Ultra is expensive but worth it.
