Yes that is normal for pups to try and get out. You do want to try and stop it though before he hurts his jaw.
My bet though is that he's doing it because he's teething, rather than separation anxiety, especially if he's not whining or scratching at the cage. Make sure he has a lot of chew toys in his crate. At 4 months, I'd imagine he's started to teethe, which is very painful for dogs. That could be a big reason that he's chewing...to relieve some of the pain. I'd imagine the bars on the cage are cold and may feel good to him. Try putting some of his toys in the freezer for a while and giving them to him wehn they are nice and cold. You can also make ice cubes from beef or chicken bullion. Kongs are also great.
I'd also spray the inside of the cage with Bitter Apple spray. It tastes nasty and will stop him from chewing on the bars. You can get it at any pet store.

Drooling and whining or barking are normal for the first while while crate training. As a puppy he might need to go out to do his business in the middle of the night, that might calm him a bit.
The teething idea is a good one two, give him something good to gnaw on to take away boredom or relieve a need to chew from teething. Good luck.

It is perfectly normal! My shih tzu does the shih tzu all the time. I asked the vet why and he said it b/c dogs like to observe things at all times and that they might just get excited and start to pant or drool as a sign of curiosity. Hope I could help!

well you frist must start to train him to go to the door when he want to do his job.I found that a puppy need to go out more then an older dog.this will take time but if you reward him for it he will caught on faster and when he is bad you must let him know that was a bad thing to do .After six months he sould be ready to be on his own and not caged while you are there with him.

Is it drool or where he wet on himself?? You should try to get up during the night to take him out. If it is drool, you need to find somewhere else to put him overnight.

try one of the "Gourdo" toys and fill them with some treats. http://www.theDivaDog.com under "playtime" and you're pup will be so distracted he'll break whatever patterns he has.
Good for daytime play/diversion, too!
