My husband and I, both in our early thirties, have been living in Burbank for almost 3 years now and we really like it. It is centrally located to everything with freeways (101, 134, 170 and the 5) to get you everywhere you need to go.VERY CONVENIENT! The only "lively area" in Burbank is the downtown Media district which has many movie theaters, a mall and string of restaurants and bars. Not nightlife like the Hollywood scene, however it does the trick if you just want to get some dinner, see a movie or do a little dancing. Rents can vary, but as far as the San Fernando Valley is concerned they are on the higher side, but it will be less than what you would find over "the hill". My husband and I pay 1400 for a spacious one bedroom, which I think is a bit high, however you could possibly find something for less. I am not sure how this compares with Long Beach. Overall, Burbank is a nice, quiet place to live and perfect to raise a family.

I am originally from west los angeles (near santa monica, UCLA) and my dad lives in Burbank and I have spent a lot of time out there. While it is not as fair weathered as the coast (west LA and Long Beach), the weather is still nice but can be very warm in the summer. Burbank is thought of (by my parents atleast) to be the last remaining mom and pop town in Los Angeles, maybe even SoCal in general. I would think its as good as you are going to get LA wise for raising kids. I don't know much about the rents, its gotta be cheaper than OC and the westside, but it is near downtown LA and so you are going to get a bit of the working-world competitors for apts and condos and thus the rent will be somewhat not-cheap. While the town may appear a tad white trash at first glance, the people are really nice and I think you will like it.
