In the context of your question, the word "troops" (note the plural) refers to individual soldiers.
However, a troop is also a sub-unit of armoured, field engineers and signals squadrons, just like a platoon is a sub-unit of a company. In this context, you could say that "There are 4 troops in 2 Squadron".
A troop, at least in the Canadian model, is the Armoured, Field Engineer or Signals equivalent of a platoon. Typically, it comprises roughly 40 people at the most and commanded either by a Captain or a Lieutenant.

A "troop" is a conjured word that sounds intimidating but is only one soldier. 750 "troops" means 750 soldiers. Republican "New Speak". Sounds tougher than it really is. (Troops sounds like groups and makes people think we are more numberous than we really are.) A "troop" is only one person.
A person speaking clearly would say..."750 American People are going into war tomorrow" Someone trying to drum up support for a war would say, "750 troops are headed to (insert name of country here) tomorrow." (Nothing could possibly go wrong with 750 "troops"! However, people know something could go seriously wrong with 750 individual soldiers.)
Excellent question! From reading some of the other answers here, I can see a lot of people are duped by the word "troop"! Again, I repeat, a troop is only one soldier!!! Don't let the media make you think we are bigger and more powerful than we are. Countries who hear they are invaded by even 2 American "troops" act nervous...there aren't more than two people there and it isn't as scarey as it sounds. Lets clear up the language problem and then move on toward truth!
