I'm willing to go as far south as San Diego. I really want to go to a nice resturant. I jsut don't know any :-(... My husband is going to be back from deployment and it's the first Valentines we'll have together in the past 3 years! I want it to be special! Any suggestions on food/hotels?

There are some VERY good, and wonderfully romantic restaurants in San Diego. My favorite is Island Prime, on Harbor Island near the airport. It is owned and run by the famous Chef Debra Scott. I would recommend you get reservations NOW, though! It is delicious, fairly expensive, RIGHT on the water (over the water really), has excellent steaks and seafood and wines and to-die-for popovers with jalapeno butter that come out before every meal. Ask for a table over the water outside if you're feeling adventurous - they have outdoor heaters!
In the same restaurant is a lower-scale cafe, the C-level lounge. They have steaks, salads, seafood, are a little less expensive, but really just as good.

Another GREAT restaurant is Indigo Grill, a southwestern restaurant in Little Italy on India Street. One of my favorites, and also very romantic. Split the brie appetizer, make sure one of you gets the plank salmon, or the mushroom pasta, or really just about anything. The chocolate desert, kind of a cake with a gooey inside, is incredible.

It depends upon your food preference, but I really like Bernard'O in the Rancho Bernardo area. They are a great French restaurant that's not too far of a drive. It's a great romantic atmosphere, and the food is wonderful.

If you're looking for hotels in the San Diego area, I would suggest some of the hotels in the downtown area by the marina. Either the Marriott or the Hyatt are great hotels with great restaurants. If you choose to stay in the area, there are a lot of wonderful restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter. If you like Spanish cuisine, I really like Cafe Sevilla on 4th.
