My dad wants us to get married by a Catholic priest, when only 7 people in my family are catholic and no one in his family is. I don't want to alienate everyone. I also don't want it to feel like I'm forcing him to become Catholic eithor. His family doesn't really go to church much, where my dad goes all the time. I kind of "fell from grace" and quit going often, so I'm afraid a priest wouldn't marry us anyways since I don't goto church enough.. Any suggestions on where to get married??

He was never married in a Catholic church, so he believes that his marriages are not recognised by God and that may be a reason they ended like they did. So he thinks for a marrage to work and thrive you need to be married catholic, and that way God will recognise the vows.

You could find a "nuetral" church, like an Episcopal church or an "Old Catholic" (Utrecht) church.

Congratulations!

Your fiance does not have to become a Catholic for you and your fiance to get married in the Catholic church.

I suggest you discuss your situation honestly and sincerely to your local priest and sign up for pre-marriage classes. They will help you wherever you decide to get married.

With love in Christ.

Ummm.... why does he want you to get married by a Catholic priest then? It makes no sense.

Can't really tell you where you should get married because its up to what your heart wants.

If thats what you want, then get married by a Catholic priest. If its not, then look elsehwere. You may even like to consider a civil ceremony. Its not up to your dad, its up to you.

The two of you should decide. It's the two of you that are "becoming one flesh". The Sacrament needs a proper minister. In Western Catholicism, the "proper ministers" for the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony are the Bride and Groom. Perhaps your pops needs to go back to catechism class!!

If you don't know that Catholics ARE Christian than you're really not all that faithful anyway so it doesn't make a difference what church you get married in.
