Hello,
I have three female dogs and a ferret. First thing I done was go thur the local animal shelter and paid to get them fixed. I saved money going thur them. One of the most important things is to keep the dog away from male dogs. You may want to keep the dog in a kennel or your basement. Do not let the dog outside alone as male dogs will be there in a flash. When the dog goes outside keep on a lease and bring right back in. You will have to watch the dog outside at all time or you may get a litter of pups. When a dog becomes in heat this can last 2 weeks or longer. Also there is a shot the Vet can give your dog if it becomes pregnant, so that it will lose it's litter, within a certain time period of becoming pregnant. But there is a slight risk to the dog. You will want to discuss this with a VET before the dog is given the shot, to understand the risk completely.

The heat season will last for 21 days during which time she will bleed some or a lot. It differs.
If you do not want her to be bred, put her up safely. And remember, male dogs can smell her for five miles. Yes, 5 miles.
She must be kept inside or in some way put up and kept away from all other dogs.

Keep the girl under lock and key and close supervision at all times. It has been mentioned dogs can smell her for miles and that is true. Its like having a great big red spot light on your house.
And as others have said, when she is out of her heat, take her to your vet and have her spayed.

Isolate the female. There are diapers for house dogs. Also, you can have her spayed. This is usually around $75.

Keep her away from all male dogs. Have her spayed. Buy her some doggy diapers, altho dogs can manage to get them off if they really want to.

did you want to breed her or are you just one of the thousands of careless pet owners who are subjecting their pet to increased risks of ovarian and mammary cancer because you forgot to get 'er done?
