There was a sentence that i could not understand while i was reading a nytimes article: "Silicone kitchen tools have been lending a playful, psychedelic air to kitchens across the country, especially those where stark, sophisticated stainless steel had been the coin of the realm."

The author means introducing vibrant, 1970'sesque color schemes into the cold color palates kitchens had been sporting since the late eighties.

Cold, harsh looking stainless steel is current and 'in vogue' right now, and bright colors (primary 4's) and silicone tools are coming into fashion lending themselves to a refreshing array of 'playfulness', in an otherwise bland, stainless, and virtually colorless arena. This is my take and understanding of the comment.
