HDMI cable was supposed to connect to a HDMI port not a DVI port. Unlike HDMI, which carry both audio and video signal, DVI only carry video signal and you'll need a separate audio cable. If you have 2 devices : one with DVI and one with HDMI, you need a DVI to HDMI or HDMI to DVI cable to connect the 2 devices.

It shouldn't hurt your TV. However, the DVI output of your cable box doesn't have audio so even with a DVI to HDMI conversion cable you will need to route separate audio cables from your cable box to the TV.

I imagine you used an adapter because the connectors are very different. The video signal on HDMI and DVI are compatible so no harm. HDMI adds a digital audio signal.
