Go to your local 'All purpose' store, get the long rolled up plastic carpet runners with the smooth on one side and the "pegs" that dig into the carpet on the back side.
Cut them to length and lay them face up (pokey side up) on the furniture.
Give it about three weeks.
Store then under the furniture in case there is a lapse in behavior or when you need to use the furniture yourself. You can also lay it down in front of the furniture - but my dogs would just jump it then. Yours may be too old to jump that far. You make that call.
Voila' - No more hairy furniture.

I assume that for the past 13 years your dog has been allowed on the furniture.
Ok, you will have a hard time.
My dogs are allowed on the family room furniture but not the living room furniture, so pretty similar.
I say No...this works if I am around. If not, I put TV trays or boxes or something on the furniture to block them. One of the wise guys will knock empty boxes off or rearrange, so I have found heavier items work better.
Good Luck.

dogs don't hold onto the past like we tend to think they do, it takes only about three weeks to retrain a dog if you're consistent. you can do the no, or the clicker, or any number of offensive sounds ( or water spray with some dogs, but i assume you don't want the new furniture all wet ) all you have to do is be consistent. also buy it a comfy dog bed and shoo it in every time it gets kicked off the couch, this way it'll still have something soft to lay on. good luck!

Has he been allowed on the furniture for 13 years and just now you're springing this on him? Is that fair to the dog??

There are sprays you can buy to discourage your dog from getting on the furniture. Give some of them a try and see if any of them work. You can find them in any store that sells dog items.
You could also try asking your local pet shop what they recommend.

I am assuming that you used to let it on the furniture, but now that you have new furniture, you do not want it up there? Well, it's going to take a long time for him to unlearn this. He's used to it and, any furniture, new or used, doesn't matter to him. Whenever he jumps up there, gently shove him off and tell him no. Be persistent and have patience. Good luck

As quickly because the puppy jumps up there, yell AH AH, take her off the sofa, ask her to sit down after which compliment her. Provide her a well relaxed location to sleep at the flooring and deliver her plenty of treats whilst she lays on it.

Silly as this sounds, I spread newspaper all over the couches when I leave home. My little dogs jump up and quickly jump off because it is loud and scary and it wouldn't be comfy to lay on.
Woof!

get a can and fill it with a few cions, keep it at reach at all times by the furniture, as soon as the dog starts to jump up there shake the can by her/him and say off. Be consistant and soon all you have to say is off

Well I think a 13 year old dog is already old to try and change his ways.
