I have had that before and it ended up being a sinus infection. Go get it checked out. The odor drove me nuts for three days before I went to the doctor. Good luck.
Also, it is a good idea to rule outr any type of tumor. Sometimes people who have had brain tumors experience "phantom" odors such as ammonia, pencil shavings, etc. Don't mess around go see your doctor.

It could be a sinus infection. You may have no "cold-like" symptoms but still have a slight infection in the sinus cavity. You can let it stay there or talk to the doc about some antibiotics.

It could be a sinus infection. Get it checked out at the doctor's. You might need antibiotics. Do not ignore it. It might get worse.

Do you have mold in your home? Maybe something in your surroundings are causing this problem. Do you work with paints, carpeting, or anything with a lot of chemicals? I would ask my doc the next time I was there.
