Cologne was initially a scented water based perfume, Rosehips or oil of Jasmin etc.
After shaves ( are stilll classified in some instances) are colognes but have a spirit base which smarts when applied to the skin.)
This tends to tighten up loose skin for short perids and impart a nice aroma. Old spice? man you are so outdated ifd you are using that stuff. There are much better and more soothing products than that around these days and many women are so used to old spice they don't even smell it any more.
Go shopping and experiment

An aftershave lotion is exactly that; it helps heal your face from the indignities of the razor. A cologne is something put on more generally. Now. Having said that, I think men have to be very cautious with such things lest they smell too strongly of something so artificial as this. A little aftershave is, after all, just part of good grooming, and Old Spice does smell so nice. But leave the cologne for people with more "sophisticated" tastes, and rely on being that charming old-fashioned gentleman a lady can trust.
Believe me, it will be worth it for you. Subtle is the key.

AFTERSHAVE goes on your FACE. Cologne, used properly, does not go on your skin. Body oils can change the scent of cologne. Spray a mist into the air and let it drop on your CLOTHES. Less is more.

cologne is for you to smell good - and that's IT!
aftershave is for after you shave to cool the burning, and it smells good as a bonus
