No, it wouldn't be mean. People do this all the time. You are going to have your dog for a long time and you should have a name for it that you feel comforable with. It might take awhile, but it will learn to answer to its new name. My dog answers to almost anything I call her. lol

There is nothing wrong with changing your dog's name at all! When I adopted my abandoned lil' guy, the Animal Rescue League didn't know much about him at all and his name was one of those lost pieces of information. So I undoubtedly changed his name when I brought him home.
He adapted to that very well. I got him at the age of 3 so he was astute enough to realize that I was calling him this new name on the second day that I had him, although a great deal of re-inforcement was used so that he didn't need to doubt.
Since you already know the dog's name what I have seen recommended is that you continue to call him pug, but begin to attach the new name to that. Such as Pug/Spot (or the actual name you want here). Then gradually get rid of the name pug once he begins to recognize "Spot (or whatever you choose)".
A couple I know adopted a german shepherd named "Harley." She is now quite happily "Sam."
If you are going to change his name the sooner the better. Get him used to it while he is making changes.
Just my 2 cents worth... And good luck!

Its not wrong to change his name. You would want to stay to something that sounds close to that but if you dont want to do that you can try to say pug and the new name at the same time for a couple of weeks and then just the new name. Use food and a leash until he will come to the new name with no problems.

It would be hard to do because the dog is use to the name pug. I think the only way to change it is to name the dog similar to pug

It wouldn't be mean to change it at all, dear! My doggy has atleast five different nicknames that I call him, so just start calling "Pug" another name, and soon after, he will start responding to that name. Have fun!

I do not blame you at all, that name is horrible! No it's not wrong to change his name, he will adjust in no time. But studies have shown that animals respond better to two-syllable names better but as long as the name is kept short, the dog will be fine.

No problem at all, he'll know his new name in no time. I got an adult dog from the pound named Olivia recently, I named her Katie and it seemed like a day or two she knew her new name.

It is okay to change his name. I got a four year old golden retriever from the pound when I was a kid, and they didn't know her name. We started calling her "Goldie," and she started responding to the name in about one day. As long as you are consistent, your dog will learn his new name quickly.

since the dog is a year old it may be OK. just keep using the new name each time you call it & give him a small treat. just give when he acknowledges the new name.. mayb e you can find a name that is similar to his old one .

It's fine to change his name. As long as he understands that the word you call him is a good thing and that you mean him, he'll answer to it happily.
Just be careful to decide what you want it to be. It's not nice to change it several times on him.
