If you want homemade caramel,

boil 1can (unopened) of sweetened condensed milk (try eagle brand) for 1 1/2 hrs depending on how brown you want it. Add another 1/2 hr.

You could add some caramel extract for more of a caramel taste.

Go buy the square caramels in the baking isle. Go home and heat these with a little milk until smooth. Put the stick in the Apples. Dip the cleaned apples within and put on a piece of wax paper :0)

Do not let the caramel get to "watery" by adding to much milk. Let stand so the caramel gets hard. I have no clue if this will work in the microwave. Our father was a cook and taught us kids all sorts of stuff, and this was before microwave ovens....So I never tried with the microwave.

Eat one for me....:0)

I would just buy caramels at the store. If you went to all the trouble of making homemade caramels from scratch, you surely wouldn't want to waste them on caramel apples.

But here's a recipe from cooks.com:

CARAMEL CANDY
1/2 stick butter
1 cup canned evaporated milk
2 cups sugar
16 large marshmallows
1/4 cup sugar, caramelized
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups broken pecan pieces

Melt butter around the sides and bottom of a heavy saucepan. Add milk and sugar. Stir with wooden spoon toward the center of the pan. Add marshmallows.
Place 1/4 cup sugar in small pan to caramelize (a cast iron pan works well but is not required). Turn pan frequently to prevent burning.

Transfer melted sugar into the larger pan, stirring constantly. Lower the heat, and cook until a candy thermometer reaches 238°F, stirring often; set aside to cool to 110°F.

Stir in vanilla and pecans, continuing to stir until the candy will hold its shape. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto buttered wax paper, parchment paper or silicone sheets.

Makes approximately 30 pieces.

You need:
6 apples
1 (14 ounce) package individually wrapped caramels
2 tablespoons of milk

Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Butter a baking sheet.

Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly.

Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on prepared sheet to set.

I use Caramel and apples usually. You might want to try Caramel and apples though, I may have it wrong!

If all else fails...use Caramel and apples.

Update:
I've just found out Caramel and apples are the best ingredients for your recipe.
