If the reviews are very bad, why would you consider the Sony? I only know what I read.

I see at
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_sd630%2Ccanon_sd700is%2Csony_dsct10&show=all
that the Sony got 3.5 stars and the Canon SD630 got 4.5 stars.

Go there and click on "Read Owner Opinions" for the cameras. Even the reviews that sound sort of okay for the Sony are not too thrilled with the camera.

Between the two, I would choose the Canon, but I'd urge you to consider either the SD600 or maybe the SD700-IS. The Sony has image stabilization, so that's why I thought you might be interested in the SD700-IS, because it offers this feature also.

You get quite a bit more zoom with the SD700-IS, also.

I also note that the maximum aperture onthe Sony is f/3.5 and the Canon goes to f/2.8. This is significant and will help in low light situations.

If you are jst really hung up on the Sony, read the review at Steve's. He likes it.

Be sure to look at the sample images, though, and notice how anything next to a white object looks like it has been outlined in pencil. You will have to view the image full sized to see it, but it's very evident. Look at the sample for ISO 800 and 1000. There is so much noise, they practically look like impressionist paintings.

It's too bad that the test shots are not staged EXACTLY the same way, because you can't quite compare them. There are several standard scenes, though, and you can get an idea. I see amazing differences in the "Beach Scene," for instance. I prefer the Canon image.

While you are poking around, I agree that the SD600 is worth a look, but I am suggesting the SD700-IS because the price is similar and it has the "IS" which you might prefer.

I am also leaning towards the SD600 or SD700-IS because the SD630 does not have an optical viewfinder. Here's my standard rant on that subject:

I would choose almost any camera with an optical viewfinder over one that only has an LCD viewfinder. Why?

1. You never have the option of turning off the LCD and these things eat batteries for lunch and spit them out. Why do away with the option of a viewfinder that has zero electrical drain?

2. It can be difficult to see the image on an LCD in bright sunlight, even if they are "new and improved."

3. You have to hold an LCD viewer out at some distance in front of your face. This is more conspicuous than I prefer to be all the time.

4. The need to hold a camera at arms length will introduce some shake. I like the idea of stabilizing a camera against my face when I am taking a picture. This is especially important with a longer zoom lens. No wonder "image stablization" or "vibration reduction" is necessary with these cameras. Not that there's anything WRONG with IS or VR, but it is really a requirement with LCD viewfinders and telephoto lenses.

5. Using the LCD to view photos after you've taken them slows down the camera quite a bit. You can't shut of the LCD monitor and still take pictures if you don't have an optical viewfinder.

sony company makes good electronic products, but remember that Canon was making cameras before as well. So i feel that u should buy a camera from a camera manufacturer and not an electronic product manufacturer. Canon knows better about camera and it should be good.
