the IRS website gives links to websites where you can file both state and federal taxes for free. It is very easy.

www.taxfreedom.com takes you to the free version of TurboTax Online. If you make under a certain amount, you can do all your forms and even e-File for free. I've done it for the past 3 years or so. It will for sure do your Federal taxes, and it asks if you want to file a State return (which we dont pay here) when you're done with your federal one so you should be able to do those too.

The IRS has all of the forms online and many are pdf with the right to fill. The FTB (the California state income tax guys) have pdf forms with fill. The problem is their tax calculator can't be open at the same time, so you will need to have the FTB open in two different tabs or windows, one to complete the form and one to operate the tax calculator.
