My seven year old dachshund lost the use of both of her rear legs earlier today. She was doing well before I went to work and when I returned home from work she was dragging her back legs around behind her. She doesn't act like she is in pain, but I contacted our vet and took her in for him to look at her again. He gave her a shot and told me to take her home and lay her on a heat pad and massage her hips and call him back tomorrow. I'm very upset because I hate seeing her like this. Has anyone else been through this? If so please tell me what to expect.
Thank you.

you need to talk to your vet tomorrow. sometimes the shot, probably a steroid, might help ease the pressure and she can regain activity. but talk to your vet. many specialists can do surgery to repair the disk. it's costly and you have to make that decision. your vet should be taking some x-rays tomorrow, if it was too late today. that way they can tell where it's at and how bad it is. ask about x-rays and what to expect when you call them tomorrow. you should know though that they usually aren't in very much pain from this. i'm very sorry.

Back problems are very common in dachshund's. Be sure her weight is ideal, for optimum health. Your vet probably wants a call back tomorrow to see how she's doing and to determine if surgery might be warranted. It's horrible to watch our pets in bad conditions, and a slipped disc is painful! Dogs have a way of hiding their pain --- they don't want to upset their owner. If you hadn't brought her to the vet, rest assured, she would get worse and be in more pain.

Good luck.

I'm so sorry. My dog, Tasha, had something similar to that. Except, she fell and she went paralyzed, but it was because of a tumor near her tail. My dog was yelping though. I've been through it with two dogs. I hate it when you know what's wrong, but there's nothing you can do. Not to get you worked up, but don't be afraid to expect the worst. I wasn't ready when it happened to my dogs. It happens so fast that you can't cry enough for it to feel right. The best thing to do is to follow the doctors' orders and spend more time with her. It's better to know than to be surprised when it happens.

I bought my Boston Terrier a "doggie wheel chair". they are a little pricey but if this is long term it's worth it. I can give you more details if you like. I have been through it and it's hard to watch her go through this, but DON'T over baby her, the more you do for her, the less she'll do for herself.
My Boston was older, but she took to the wheelchair immediately. I also did alot of swimming with her. Keep stimulation going in those legs. Hope I helped you some.
