I think a doctor's responsibility extends to anything that has to do with the health problem that the patient consults with him/her... This includes educating the patient and his family regarding the disease condition...
Short of becoming a 'Superman' for the patient...... he should do everything within his power, to save or treat the patient. His responsibility towards the patient goes beyond the clinic.!

whew. Good question. When we entrust our health to a doctor's care, we expect that doctor to find out what's wrong. But sometimes the diagnosis is not obvious. It may not be fair to expect a doctor to spend hours researching a problem. Fair or not, they can't possibly spend all the time required sometimes, even though they may want to. There are just too many patients. But a doctor can help you to do some of the necessary research. I think we have no choice but to take some responsibility for our own diagnosis and care. Based on your symptoms, I think the doctor should give you a list of keywords to search for your own possible diagnosis, as well as a list he/she has prepared on various methods of approaching your search. You may hire a researcher at $10/hr if you want. After you find some possible diagnoses, your doctor can run tests to rule out some of the possibilities, or confirm a diagnosis, and you'll feel empowered that you took some responsibility for your own health.
Here's to your health!
