Every parrot has his own little quirks, and personality traits, that make him unique!! He is either just playing or cleaning his beak, or just being himself!! My amazon and Grey, both wipe their beaks side to side on their perches after eating to clean, and hone them, perfectly normal--most all parrots also grind their beak together, rather loudly, especially around bed-time, which is their equivalent of brushing their teeth!!! It cleans the inside edges of their beak, and keeps it sharp and in good shape. Your little guy is just being perfectly normal---Birdman

birds beaks are made out of the same thing our fingernails are made of. They grow and shed, and are highly sensitive. have a course perch available in the cage along with large cuttlebones. This will give him something to rub his beak against to naturally rub it down. This is what I'm guessing he's doing, trying to stimulate the sensitive beak or trim it down. It's instinct.

Some avian vets will dremmel (grind) the layers of the beak away to prevent bacterial growth, while others will not. The buzzing of the drill is terrifying to a bird whose never heard it, and the act of "sanding" down the beak creates friction and heat, even sometimes pain.

Always spend at least three hours a day with your bird. Do take your bird to the vet to be clipped, but dremmeling the beak is personal decision between you and your vet. Stress can do a number on a bird, even kill it, which is why any sort of body modifications should be done by a vet.

If it is behavioral, there may be other symptoms to look for. Excessive screaming, feather plucking and body mutilation, head bobbing, cage aggression, sudden aggression, hissing, or timidness.

Rotating toys every other day, at least three hours of out of cage time daily, 12 hours of light, 12 hours of available sleep time, a good diet, and ultraviolet lighting will alleviate stress issues.

remember, macaws are notorious for getting into trouble. they'll climb right off the perch, onto the floor, into the kitchen, and into the cabinets. They'll climb your curtains, chew your wood work, and rearrange your knick-knacks onto the floor. They are natural foragers and chewers and will destroy your home. Always supervise your bird while he's out. A macaw is an exotic animal with natural instincts that cannot be tamed out of him. Becuase of this, for his safety (think toilets and electrical cords) and your sanity, the bird should be caged when you are not in the same room, or housed in a bird safe aviary. Macaws are like kids. You know they're getting into something when everything is quiet.

Maybe he's got something stuck in his upper beak...there is a spot up there where it comes to a 'v' and there could be something caught in there.
My Illigers "Gabby" rubs his beak back and forth on his perch to get the food that he has on his beak on the sides, off.
If your bird is pulling on his beak ...I'm thinking that there must be something stuck in there.
Can you look up in there? Or maybe take your finger and feel up in there to see if there isn't maybe a sunflower seed husk stuck up in there?
Also....my "Gabby" clicks his beak. It sounds really loud and I'm still trying to figure exactly out how he does it....it almost sounds like he's going to break his beak sometimes because it is so loud.
I hope that you find out what is going on with your bird soon ....so the both of you willl be ok. ~wink~
good luck

CORRECTION: Birds are not meant for cages. However since you do own one, he needs to be let out. It sounds like a combination of two things, he needs a cuttlebone, they like to file their beak and he probably feels imprisoned and is exhibiting signs of an emotional disturbance. Another sign of an emotional disturbance is plucking of his feathers. First, go to a vet and get his wings trimmed, nails cut and his beak shaved so that it is flat. Shaving the beak may be disturbing the first time, but after that it wouldn't be so dramatic (take as long), it would just be a touch up. That beak can rip you up if isn't shaved!! I know. Once done, he won't hurt himself flying around or hurt you. Then you can have him hang out on the back of your couch and the like. Most large bird owners provide a perch stand with several bars that is his territory, and it's outside of the cage. He should also have wood, and various veggies to chew on. They like to chew. Your worries will go away once you take these actions, because he will be much happier and not acting like he is. You are very fortunate, they can be splendid, loving companions.
