I was interested in getting a new pup or kit and it will need to be chipped so he don't get lost. How much? Where do they put it in? Is it like the gps in my dads car?

your vet or a shelter can do it. it costs anywhere from $10-$50 depending on which company you register the chip with. it doesn't keep them from getting lost. you can't track their movements. but it can and does help you if they get lost. the chip is placed under the skin between the shoulder blades. you can't feel it, it's very small. it can be read by a special scanner. so if your pet is lost and brought to an veterinary clinic, or shelter then they scan the pet. the number tells them which company to call and then that company calls your and tells you where your pet is. you can have this done at any age. some wait until the pet is old enough and have it done while under anestetic while being spayed or neutered.

I asked my vet that question today because I'm debating if I should or not (I probably will). They charge $50 everything included for the chip and visit. You might wnat to call your shelters/rescue to see if they do the services as a lower price. The company HomeAgain gives discounts off for the product. The service cost (enrollement in the database cost) $17.50

How much does HomeAgain cost?
HomeAgain can be purchased directly from veterinary clinics, where the price may vary. When you purchase HomeAgain directly through your veterinarian, enrollment in the database costs an additional $17.50.

There is a scanner that reads the chip in the pet and they identify the numbers (I assume) and match it up with you.

What’s unique about the new HomeAgain WorldScan™ reader?
The new HomeAgain WorldScan™ reader, manufactured by Digital Angel, Inc., reads all microchips utilizing the 125 kHz and 128 kHz radio frequencies (HomeAgain, AVID and Trovan) including those that previously could not be read by all U.S. scanners. The HomeAgain WorldScan reader also detects the 134.2 kHz microchips, or ISO chip, commonly used outside of the United States and can read some Digital Angel 134.2 kHz ISO chips. While the new scanner will not display the number of all ISO chips, it will indicate the presence of the chip so that steps toward a recovery can be put in place.

For more information about HomeAgain, call 1-800-521-5767 or contact the HomeAgain Pet Recovery Service at 1-866-PETID24 (1-866-738-4324).

Good Luck. Smart decision.

PS. There is another company that does microchip; however, the one I know and my vet uses is HomeAgain.

First of all, you don't do it. The vet will. They will put it into the fatty layers between the neck and back. The microchip is then scanned to make sure that it took properly. Animal Control in Indiana does it for $10, call around and see what prices you get. Calls shelters, they usually do them cheaper because it helps keep animals out of there. No it's not like a gps system at all. It has to be scanned to know who the owner is. They do sell gps collars for animals though.

One of our dogs is chipped, one of our dogs is not.
Only one of our dogs is a runner, so we chipped him immediately. The other dog will probably be chipped, we just haven't done it yet.

Our vet uses the AVID system, the "other" system from the Home Again. The vet charged us $30 to microchip him. Most dogs are chipped in the folds of skin near the neck, but Succotash's chip is actually along his spine right behind his shoulder. It might be because of his breed, I'm not sure. (He's a Jack Russell.)

She sent us home with some information and we have to register him, which costs $17.50, and then will be another $6 every time we move. If we don't register with AVID's system, if he's found and the chip is scanned, when the AVID number comes up, they'll get his vet's information, not my telephone number.

Since we're in the process of moving out of state, I'm going to wait until we have a new address to register; our current vet will definitely know how to get a hold of us in case of emergency.

The chip won't keep him from getting lost. What it will do is link him to you in case he is lost. If he gets lost and a good person finds him and takes him to a veterinary office or shelter, they'll scan him to see if he has a chip. His ID # will come up, they'll call AVID (or Home Again) find out who he belongs to and call you so you can go get him.

The chip in my two dogs was inserted into the loose skin around their necks. You won't really be able to see or feel it. A special device - a wand I believe - is passed over the animal with the chip impant which then reads the data on the inserted chip. Sometimes the chips get loose and may wander a bit in the animal's body, which is why the wand is pased over the body.

I had my two dogs micro-chipped at the shelters from whcih I got them. Was very inexpensive - I think around $10 for dog I got 10 years ago and around $20 for the dog I got two and a half years ago.

no you don't do it a vet does and all vets don't do it, if your vet doesn't ask if they know one that does and then call and find out how much it is I was thinking about doing it to mine too but since he is old and nearly completely blind I won't but I was told about a vet in my area and I called them and it's $60. and not it's not like the gps in you dads car, if an animal control officer finds your pet then they can scan them for the chip and it will come up where the pet's address, family and family's phone # they will usually call and let you know that you pet has been found.

YOu don't track the pet. You are assigned a number and they are read by a scanner and that number is registered to you. Your animal shelter or vet can place one in the animal you adopt

Depends on where you go. At my vet it was $25 (which gets the chip and the registration on it).

THE COST PROBABLY DEPENDS ON YOUR VET-I THINK AT MY VET IT IS $27.00 FOR A DOG-THEY SHOOT IT IN THE EXTRA SKIN ON THE NECK-KINDA LIKE AN EAR PIERCING GUN AND YOU DON;T FIND IT-IF YOUR PET GETS LOST-ANY VET OR SHELTER HAS A HAND-HELD SCANNER THAT THEY RUN ABOVE THE ANIMAL AND IT FINDS THE CHIP WITH YOUR NAME, ADDRESS AND PHONE # ON IT AND TA DA! YOUR PET IS RETURNED TO YOU.
