Ant: It's not as easy as one sentence to answer your question. Living in a foreign place with a strange family can turn into a horror movie fast for you. No criminal background checks are done on the host families. If you get there and the place is filthy or you don't get along with the family you lose your money. It costs $4,000 to $10,000 plus $200 a month that your parents have to send you. Also, no credit for school and you will have an extra year of high school. The colleges have good programs and they give college credit for exchange. High school students have big trouble trying to get help from foreign police if the host family steals your money or other problems. Would you go live with a strange family across town? State? think about it before you move thousands of miles. See the Committee for Safety of Foreign Exchange Students and see for yourself.
