Think of depression VS eczema - Eczema is seen and has nothing to do with anything internal, whereas depression is mental and requires a different kind of treatment. :)

There is no difference. mental illnesses are illnesses of the brain, that are poorly understood and therefore there are no objective tests for them. Once a so-called mental illness is understood, it gets moved into another category and is then considered a physical illness, only a physical illness occurring in the brain. Other thoughts along this line: epilepsy is a brain disorder, but it is not considered a mental illness, schizophrenia is a brain disorder, but it is treated by psychiatrists instead of neurologists, so it's called a mental illness. Over 60% of people going to the primary care doctor actually have "mental illnesses" making them have back pain, stomach problems, pains, etc., so called physical illnesses. It's all the same. Our western culture has artificially seperated the brain from the rest of the body. Kind of rambling here. You wait and see, tho. In 30 years, there won't be a term "mental illness" anymore. There will be a name for each condition, instead, with lab tests and the whole thing like we have now for diabetes.
