Is it any good? Can you tell a difference? Also, what's a low fat alternative to icing? I can't stand Nutrasweet or Splenda btw. Thanks!

The applesauce works really well, but let me tell you what really rocks... pour a can of diet soda into the mix, nothing else. Stir it up and bake it - - you will be shocked! I thought it would never work, but a friend told me about it, and it's terrific! I've tried diet Dr. Pepper in a chocolate mix, diet orange in yellow mix (yum) and diet cherry cola in chocolate. Trust me, it's so good! You can ice a cake like this: Sm. box instant vanilla pudding
1 c. milk
1/4 c. powdered sugar
Sm. container Cool Whip
or, just slap some low-fat pudding on it and be done with it. ;)

Good luck!

You can substitute the applesauce at a 1:1 ratio for oil. I do this all the time and it turns out perfect. The best is actually when you sub the applesauce in a chocolate cake mix and add some cinnamon and nutmeg. The flavors complement each other very well!

Yep and it tastes awesome! It is just as moist as making it the regular way. I can't tell the difference at all. You can also use clear soda, diet or regular, instead of the oil. Made this way it tastes just the same as made with the oil.

I have done this before for icing and it tastes pretty good, use Cool Whip to frost the cake, yes you can get low fat or fat free Cool whip as well.

use the same amount of applesauce as the oil called for you will have a moister, very tasty cake and no one will tell the difference,as for icing, try beating low fat cream cheese with a couple tblsp fresh lemon juice and 1/4-1/2 cup of powdered sugar, great on just about any flavor cake, hope you enjoy it

I don't see why not. Those who are poo-pooing it have probably never eaten the old-fashioned "Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake" from scratch. I say: go for it! Give it a whirl. The main ingredients in Mayo are: soybean oil, water, and eggs!

Yes, there is not that much of a difference I think it was good with the lemon flavored cake....another idea for a substitution for oil is sprite...in the lemon cake. Very good..if you like lemon.

Peace

One of my coworkers, whose brownies are ADDICTIVE, once used applesauce as a substitute. They were horrendous.

We told her that if she ever did that again, she would be shot.

I haven't made it but I have had it and didn't know the difference. Don't know about the frosting though. It's all sugar, so I don't know.
