It's a good question. Saddam was clearly a despot, an oppressor and a murderer, but was he any worse in that sense than Pinochet of Chile, who lived out his days completely unpunished? Even in the context of the Middle East he was really no worse than the rulers of many other states. The ruling dynasties of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait spring to mind amongst others. But they are the friends of the West, aren't they?
Saddam was an oppressor, but was he any less so when UK and US were arming him against Iran? In the same sense, although the Taliban are pretty messed up, were they any less dangerous when the west was arming them against the Russians.
It seems that the sin is not being evil, or committing atrocities against one's own people, or against others. The sin is in turning against the US and it's interests. And that, it would seem is the one crime punishable by death (at least if you are a former head of state).

No more than a lot of others who are equally as bad or worse
where so many Americans are getting their facts from the lord only knows
Saddam was a dictator and evil no one disputes the fact
but he also did some good for Iraq
he dragged Iraq from what it was ,into the 20th century
Iraqi men and women of all religions where well educated
Before the sanctions all Iraqis were well fed and had access to medical care
In Iraq both men and women of any faith had the chance of working as doctors scientists teachers etc
women were allowed modest western style clothes and not forced to wear the veil
different faiths lived together in equality and peace
Iraq now
Half of Iraqis say life was better under Saddam
5 million people are displaced ,living in makeshift camps in neighbouring countries and with no right to work or no source of income
Hospitals are lacking even the basics to give medical care
There has been more killings since the occupation than in 35 years of Saddam
Up to a 100 people are found tortured and murdered on the streets of Baghdad every day
Women now can not work and must be veiled even if non muslim or suffer reprisals
the Government are shia and are forging links with Iran to make Iraq into a radical islamist state
these are facts which can be easily checked by any one and are understood by most of the world apart from America

Let the hate mail begin. You are obviously against his execution. Most in this country probably see you as a traitor and a hippie. You are doing what true Americans should be doing. asking the tough questions. His execution has not and never will make that region better or less violent. What would our president do if a group of people were trying to kill him? Kind of like the ones Saddam did away with. Not kill them but pretty close. Sure he was a tyrant and dictator and all that but how much more different is our president. Bush does what he wants without listening to the very people that put him into power. We The People. Only God Shall have the final say for Saddam. and Bush. Men of destruction and greed.

Bush is the criminal for killing a previous ally to his father. Al Maliki is a criminal for killing a leader on a Muslim Holiday... As for saddam's life i have no idea but am pretty sure he ordered the mass-killings... but in the end America does not care about the best interests of the Iraqi's... it only cares about oil, and death to islam...

He didn't just kill 100's of Iraqi's.
The death toll is about 650,000!
That's not including the 3,000 US and UK soldiers who have been killed in this pointless and illegal 'war'.
If the UN really works, then Bush and Blair are going to be hanged, and will go down in history as equals to Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Chairman Mau.
They are war criminals, and should be brought to justice. NOW

Who lost? That is you answer. Saddam was whacked by his countrymen, There was certainly a revenge factor involved. The people he oppressed are now the people in power in Iraq.
There is no acceptable answer to your question. Depends on the side you are on, you can't straddle the fence or you simply wind up collateral damage.

Bear in mind that he was responsible for the killing of thousands on innocent civilians - genocide.
Bottom line is he got off very lightly.

After Saddam was found by his US captors he was returned to Iraq where he was tried by his own government. He killed several hundred thousand people...and days, even hours prior to his death, still spoke proudly of his plans for the genocide of his racial nemesis....Saddam was evil. Period.
