My daughter brought home a fledgling that couldn't fly yet. We have an outdoor aviary so when he was able to fly I put him out there. A friend found a fledgling ringneck dove that couldn't fly yet, so I did the same with her. They mated and had one hybrid chick; the pigeon was black, the dove white, and the chick gray. The mom (dove) died before the half-pigeon was weaned, so his dad, the pigeon, finished bringing him up. The dad's affection for his son was really something to see, he would get so excited! Now they are grown up and are good friends.
Birds are usually almost full-sized when they leave the nest, even if they aren't weaned yet.
