I've been offered a job which will require me to commute through driving. I need to rent a car for a period of 3 months and is trying to find the cheapest deal considering my circumstances.

I am 23 years old and only have a debit card. I plan to drive the car only on weekdays and will be commuting from San Francisco to San Refael (CA). I'm looking for a company that would not charge extra because I am under 25 (but has a good driving record) and will except payment from a debit card and/or from someone else's credit card. Are there any options for me? Thanks!

Alamo takes debit cards with a Visa or Mastercard logo.

Dollar,Enterprise, National, and Thrifty will rent to drivers age 21 to 24; but will come with restrictions and other charges like daily surcharge and, in most cases, you won't be able to take advantage of promotions or discounts; you will be required to pay the highest base rate.

Individual locations may have different rules.

I've found the cheapest rates from Rent-A-Wreck and City Rent-A-Car. I don't know their age restrictions.

If you're using someone else's card, they could rent the car and list you as an additional driver. However, this could be more expensive.

Why do you want to rent a car for only 3 months? You would be better off getting a good used car. Have you figured the cost of renting a car for 3 months? The average rental amount is about $25/day. You could buy a car after you made the final payment for the rental after 3 months.

That's probaby going to cost you about $2,000. You could probalby buy a passable runner for that amount of $$$. If you didn't need it at the end of the 3 months, you could probalby sell it on for about what you paid for it. Your total cost would be gas, insurance, and maybe a minor repair or two. Even if you had to replace the engine, you'd come out even in the end compared to the cost of a rental.

Dude...try to scrape together about 2K and buy a beater that is dependable enough to transport you for a few months. The rental charges are going to kill you and if you don't have an insured vehicle the rental car insurance will BURY you. Expect appx. $40.00 per day minimum.

try a local car rental agency, one that isn't part of the national chains. they will probably have better rates, too. However, the cars might not be all that great.
