go to DMV and ask them to perform a title search. when the previous owner does not claim the vehicle, you can apply for a duplicate title. when you have it, you can have it reassigned to you.

The car would have been given to you prior to the persons death. Try taking the Vin # to a state license office where the car was last registered and ask for a trace on the car as to whom owned it and also who had the last registration. If it was a relative in your family and the family can prove with a death certificate that a person has died you may have some luck. If not your pretty much up against a wall. Anyone could claim a car if it was not theirs. You need to at least got talk to the deceased persons insurance company. They may have a suggestion.

say you found the car
and put notice in newspaper
since title is lost
no one will have it to claim it
eventually after certain amount of day
you can get issure a new title to the car
finders keeper
but if some lucky stranger has the title he's the owner :D

The executor of the estate can file for a replacement and with a copy of the death certificate the executor can sell the car..
A surviving spouse and son or daughter can get the replacement title and sell it also.
