the back muscles of the neck are primarily concerned with extension and to a great extent, the stability of the head.
semispinalis
splenius capitis
longggisimus capitis
the trapezius muscle, although occupying a large portion of the back of the neck, is primarily concerned with elevation of the shoulders and is technically therefore a part of the shoulder girdle region and not of the capital or head and neck region.

the most notable muscle in the front of the neck is the sternocleido mastoid. it is concerned with flexion, rotation and lateral flexion (side bending of the neck).

there are several more muscles that are within the neck region. however, they are muscles that are concerned with speech, mastication or chewing and swallowing :digastric, mylohyoid, stylohyoid and geniohyoid.
