Why is it that a single mother is a victim, while a single father is not? As a single father (my fiancee was killed by a drunk driver when our daughter was 2, she is now 4) I have filed many appeals in court because of lack of support from the government and have won, but I still am shocked how often people fail to care about the situations many men are in. It seems as though single mothers get extra benefits beyond what a single father would receive in the same situation. These benefits extend beyond financial incentives, and include community support, outreach programs and M-for-M programs, etc. Yes, there are far less single fathers than single mothers, but the suicide rate among young males is so high, and one of the reasons I felt motivated to ask this question is because lately I have found myself depressed (not suicidal) and I blame it on the lack of community support and outreach.

Why does society have such little compassion for single fathers, yet so much for single mothers?

Well i guess most single fathers have jobs or the money. but maybe u answered ur question. I think that most people dont realize the problems of single fathers because there arent many around. Maybe you or you could influence someone to start something where single fathers can be helped. MOre ppl need to be informed.

We have several single fathers in our church who have their kids and the mother does not for various reasons. In one such case the mother passed away, and the rest have to do with drugs and what have you. I have to agree with you, this is not such a common problem but it is becomming more and more common. These men to find the government discrimminating against their situation, and the fact is they don't make any more than the averaged single mother. I would suggest starting a yahoo group that deals with single dads and thier children, and together you could form a group and try to come up with the support that you need. Every group starts out small and if you start this group I would be happy to let my friends know about it.
I am sorry for the problems that you are dealing with and I wish I had a quick answer but I don't.

I understand what you are saying. I'm sorry for your loss. However, the only support that single moms get is the single mom that can qualify for financial help and welfare. I am a single mom of a 7 year old, and have never asked for help, support, or welfare. I started a new career (commission only) that has been very trying. I don't qualify for any financial aide and would never consider welfare or qualify. I have no health insurance and sometimes no paychecks. The only thing I hold onto for support is the fact that I am raising a wonderful little girl who is not spoiled or lacking attention. She is my world and I'd live with no support just to get her hugs everyday. It is a tough job that whether you are male or female no one understands unless they are doing it. Hold on, keep positive, and know that that little one will grow up to admire and respect you for the job you did. Most of the time all us single parents need is a little pat on the back. Good Job for doing what a lot of men do not have the courage to do! Unfortunately all the dead beat dads out there give you guys a bad name. Good luck!

First off, I am sorry about your loss. I have been a divorced parent who got no support. 3 children and did all the paperwork for childsupport.....yet nothing. I see at times when
a man is single raising a child, people go on as if they are the greatest. A man raising a child on his own wow. But millions of woman do it everyday and it just seems expected. I would say that most likely the support Moms put together for one another. Start your own groups for single dads. God bless you and I wish you and your daughter well. I hope these support groups for single Moms welcome you in with open arms. Really when you get down to it, a single parent is a single parent and it is all about the children and what can help them. Stay strong.

Single mothers joined together at some point and formed those groups. At some point in time it wasnt accepted to be a single mother. Women had abortions or travelled away to have their babies in secret and give them away. I know single mothers groups that have expanded to become single parents groups and let men in. There are a lot more single moms than dads. I have been a single parent I know the struggle. Now being remarried it is wonderful to be in a 2 parent household again ( although with 4 children they still have us out numbered:) ). Get the word out to more single dads. Start a group. Make people see that their are 2 sides to every story.

repeal the law in your country. That is covered by the law of the land, hence society has no power over the said law of your government
