What a HUGE can of worms you are opening.
There are as many of those books as their are opinions about the Bible.
Here are some facts for you...
1. The Bible is a dynamic document, which means it is not today what it was 1500 years ago, many facts and statements have been 'edited' through time.
2. The Bible was never intended to be what it is today. Most religious leaders maintain that it was written exactly how God intended, that no facts are incorrect, that nothing has been altered. Truth is, certain writtings were canonized simply because it was believed that they were valuable to understanding our faith. The Book of Revelation, for example was almost not included and the arguments for including it have since been proven incorrect.
3. Many writtings are not intended to be taken as historical fact, such as in the case of Genesis. Genesis is very metaphorical, not historical. Just ask any Jewish rabbi.
I love the Bible. I usually use the Amplified Version but it's a bit of a mouthful for newbis. You are going down a trail that could take 15-20 years before you start to gain true understanding of.
Most important word of advice, read with an open mind, ear and spirit. Let the Spirit of Christ guide you. Don't rely to much upon the understanding of men.
The Word and the Spirit do validate each other. But the Spirit IS God while the word, well, sadly, it's been tampered with through time.
BTW, don't worry about all the names, even the Bible get's that wrong. For example, check out who the priest was when David came and had some of the bread. Then, find where Christ refers to the incident and the two priests are not the same.
The brain is poorly wired for remembering facts. It's much better put to use finding practical meaning. Use your brain as intended and you just may learn something valuable from the experience.

First, get a Concordance, Strong's Exhaustive Concordance is a great start. It is a Hebrew/greek to English dictionary that will give you huge ammounts of insight. The way this book is set up you will be able to look up a word; for example, Birthday and it gives a list of places that word is found according to KJV,
Gen. 40:20 ... Mat 14:6 ... Mark 6:21. Then for each entry there is a corresponding/s number to look in the Hebrew or Greek
3117, 3205 ... 1077 .... 1077. So you can look and find that in Genesis the birthday that the Pharoh celebrated was indeed a day, and that parts of the word represents life and perpetuality and the second reference is to birth, labor and bringing forth, and that thre Greek in Mathew and Mark says that it is a day celebrating birth. In finding out these things about this word you can also notice that the only two in the book who reportedly heeded this celebration were fairly bad dudes.

I've been where you are. My first "kick at the cat" was reading the King James Version starting Old Testament and went right through in order until the end of New Testament. Took quite a while and didn't get much.
You might want to try an easier version like "The Message" or an Amplified Bible like New International Version. Here's online versions of both below.
You also may want to try a daily devotional that can give you scripture and food for thought that ties in verses with meaning. I bought "Bible Seeds" which is a great little daily read as well as the Radio Bible website has nice devotionals:

A modern study Bible may help. I can recommend the NIV Study Bible, and the RYRIE Study Bible (in NIV, NASB, or KJV). Also the "Bible Knowledge Commentary" is a two set commentary for about $35 that will give you a real good start. Probably the best all around translation will be the NIV. If you want to go deeper than that, then you may want to take some courses from a Bible college, or maybe via internet.

I will just quote some scriptures . 2 Cor 4:4 4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 1 Cor 1:26-31 26 Brothers, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. 28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29 so that no one may boast before him. 30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: "Let him who boasts boast in the Lord." John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. Matthew 5:5 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. No mention of education, culture, station in life, or ethnic group not being able to come to accurate knowledge .

Stay away from books, websites, and commentaries.
A good teacher that reads and teaches verse by verse is the only way to come to understanding. Plus many study hours on your own to verify everything the teacher has taught.
Guess what ??
It's a life long study.
I have been deeply studying for 17 years and feel like I just scratched the surface.

My advice would be to only read the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. You don't need to understand the whole bible to understand what Jesus was trying to say, if all you ever read was the sermon on the mount I believe you would grasp the meaning of the entire bible since it can be summed up in one feeling

Maybe just take notes as you go of certain details on a small piece of paper you can refer to whenever you want to know.
Important Names of Genesis:
Adam, Seth, Noah, Abram/Abraham, Isaac, Jacob/Israel, Joseph
