You don't necessarily need to give in order to receive. However, giving and receiving are reciprocal in nature: too many people on one side of the equation throws off the balance.
Monetary contributions allow organizations to provide goods and services to individuals in need. If you feel strongly about the mission of a particular organization, then donating money will help you to mold the world in a positive manner.

I can answer this one for you, If you been in a disater like a hurricane or earthquake you may feel sympathetic towards people who have a loss in an emergency, or you feel that way with out being in an emergency. I personally feel sympathetic towards people at high risk for HIV and AIDS, so I feel the need to donate on that basis. Its just that part of me that feels that I want to make a change in the world. Even though you might feel you have just like $25 dollars to give it still helps because there are about millions of people out there too that are going to donate that very same amount.
