Several major points. Number one, we used to live in the old days under a mutually assured destruction (MAD) scenario.,i.e. The old Soviet Union and the United States deterred each other from WW III because we knew we would destroy each other and the planet if we ever went to war. It was a deterrent.

Another point is that the death penalty used to be used as a deterrent to murder but because it takes so long to execute someone and so few states do it, it no longer works.

And now the major point, the invasion of Iraq, in my opinion, and this is my theory (I haven't heard anyone else articulate it), is meant as a message to organized terroism. The message is this, If you ever attack the mainland US again, you can expect to have your Arab country (choose any) occupied until the US is done with it. Secondly, besides this deterrent, we are trying to build a foothold of freedom and open democracy friendly to US interests to insure organized terrorism can not get powerful enough again to do another 9/11-like strike.

And finally - You do know that we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? Liberals ?! The military has a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. Civilians have the luxury of not knowing what the military knows: that the Iraqi war, while tragic, probably saves lives. And the military occupation of Iraq, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives! Liberals don't want the truth because deep down in places they don't talk about at parties, they want us on that wall! They need us on that wall! the military uses words like honor, code, loyalty. They use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. Liberals use them as a punchline. The military has neither the time nor the inclination to explain itself to a liberals who rise and sleep under the blanket of the very freedom that the military provides, and then questions the manner in which they provide it! They would rather you just said, "Thank you," and went on your way. Otherwise, the military suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post.

I can tell you that some of them are attempting to show kindness and generosity to the children of Iraq, and trying to set an example that not all American soldiers are only there to occupy their country. There have been images of soldiers handing out candy, helping children find their parents, teaching basic English etc. We can only hope that some of this small kindness is remembered if we are called upon to fight their generation 20 years from now.

What my soldiers did in Mosul and Baghdad (172nd Stryker Brigade) was they trained the Iraqi police and military. In Mosul, when they left the 2 main FOBs there they basically signed them over to the Iraqi police and Army. Showing huge stabilization in that area.
In Baghdad they were building up schools, further training the AP and IAs. Although Baghdad is still a mess, the 172nd Stryker Bgd. left it in more than 200% better then when they got there. There was less insurgent activity (no matter what the media may say) and there was a great deal more stability to the region.

Sometimes, especially with dictators like Saddam, war is the only answer. How else would you take him out? We tried negotiations, inspections, etc. to no answer.

I would say the soldiers are protecting what freedom the Iraqi people have. They haven't had freedom in over 2,000 years. The reason for the instability is because they don't know how to handle it, especially with Islam extremists.
