I had a transplant 7 months ago. Some things that you should AVOID giving her are:

1. Food - transplant patients are on very restricted diets, due to diseases that can be passed (salmonella, e-coli). Something like packaged candy would be fine. No fresh fruit baskets though. Often we lose all of our sense of taste for awhile anyway and aren't very interested in food.

2. Plants/Flowers - Transplant patients shouldn't be exposed to a lot of pollen and other things that plants and flowers have. They need to wear a mask to keep this sort of thing (along with viruses, funguses...etc) at bay so they don't become sick and end up back in the hospital with pnemonia or another problem

From my own, personal experience things like gift cards or certificates to video stores or book stores were very nice. We're kinda just "stuck" at home for a couple of months, things that can entertain our minds help pass the hours away. I'm sure her husband, son or someone could use the gift cards to get her what she would like.

Maybe a nice diary for her to write in. It's theraputic for us and often transplant counselors suggest we write down our experiences.

A small donation to the American Cancer society or another reputable organization that deals with her type of cancer, donated in her name is also a very thoughtful and appreciated gift.

Hope this helps

That's really difficult. Remember that with a stem cell transplant her immune system has been severely compromised. She cannot have any visitors in her house or rooms for quite some time.

There is very little that you can do for her as a service. But, probably she would enjoy a nice card from you or ecard. Or depending on how close you are to her a book on tape that she could listen to might be appropriate.

What is hard about giving her anything else has to do with the fact she is in isolation if she just had a stem cell transplant. Her immune system is still weak and she is unable to have visitors and must be cautious about all infection and bacteria. So . . absolutely NO plants or flowers since they can harbor bacteria. And, food is difficult to give . . their are certain fruits and vegetables she must be careful about. Not sure if she is still unable to have new items in the house yet either.

Maybe she would enjoy some type of craft item?

You should probably check with your son's friend to see what his mother can and can not have first. Still, the best bet is something along the lines of a card . . or perhaps even a movie DVD.

Her recovery is still ongoing, even though she is home.

Hope I gave you a few ideas. And, you are very thoughtful. Stem cell transplant is a long process.

It's really nice of you to be thinking of her and willing to actually do something for her. Good for you! and her!
Try doing all the things around the house for her that she would normally be having to do.
You didn't mention if you were a male or female. So, if you are a woman you can make sure that all the laundry is kept up and the bedding and dishes and maybe take care of the meals for a few days. Do some shopping for her...make sure that she gets her mail, you know...all the stuff that she would normally be needing to do if she were able.
Now, if you are a man you could do all the things that have needed to be done for quite some time then do those things....like maybe... put in a light bulb that would maybe take a ladder to replace it. Or, well, you know...that kind of stuff.
But, the first thing to get that is just a starter and really does mean allot is....a live plant that she can have next to the bed.
A live plant is always a good thing for anyone that is either in the hospital or in bed getting better.
There should be more people like you in the world. It surely would make it a better place...wouldn't it? ~big smile~
Take good care.

The absolute first-rate solution to flip him on is to shock him. Make the transfer on him in an unique position or surroundings. Break any scheduling conduct you'll have additionally. The extra you speak approximately it, he'll often develop uncomfortable. If you play the feminist factor of view...He isn't going to move for it.
