The purpose of this project is to figure it out on your own. If we give you ideas it A) is cheating and B) will pre empt, supersede or otherwise cancel out any original ideas you might have had.

Your best tool for this project is your own brain, not Yahoo Answers!

Roll each of the five sheets of copy paper into cylinders of about
1 inch in diameter. Tuck the ends in so they will stay rolled up.
Place these five columns at the vertices of a regular pentagon.

Now take one sheet of newspaper and fold it in two and place it over the the five columns.

Now take the other sheet of newspaper and wad it up and place it under the middle of the pentagon.

I'm sure you can massage this idea to make it better but basically I think it could work. From what height is the egg being dropped from? Will there be any problem of making sure the egg hits the middle of the pentagon? Is it possible to miss your pentagon altogether? These are all factors to consider.

Good luck.

wrap up the egg in the newspaper, then create some kind of folder triangular shell with the copy paper, because pyramids/triangles are the strongest shape for structures and it is more likely to land on a corner or edge and reduce impact on the egg. Make sure the newspaper is crumpled loosely around the egg to absorb as much shock as possible.

line the news paper with 4 wadded up copy paper and put the last sheet of copy paper in the bottom. put the newspaper in a cross shape and hold the newspaper like a basket, kind of up at the side with the wadded paper in the center. when the egg lands on the wadded up paper it won't break.

wrap the egg in news paper. and twist it on the top. use the other paper to cushion in on the bottom (wrapped in with the egg). you will be dropping everything onto hard ground. drop the egg so the cushioned side hits first. make sure the top of the egg (smallest side of the egg) is facing down. its harder to break.

Wow. When I was in school, they gave us a shoebox and pretty much let us use whatever we wanted.

I say, google it, though I admit, I just did it and didn't find anything that I really thought was helpful. Maybe you can ask an older kid who has already done the project. Or ask an engineer.
