In my last post someone suggested Feliway to help stop my cats meowing and I was wondering if anyone has tryed it or knows of anything else I could give him that would help!

I'll put an overview of the problem below for those of you who didn't see my last post!

We adopted him from my husbands family because they could no longer care for him. We've had him for afew weeks now. The cat use to be the quiet one of the group (there were 3 others becides him) But since we got him he meows and meows like crazy! Especially at night! We think he misses his old cat companions. (he is neuterd by the way) If we can't find a way to help him settle down and stop meowing we have to get rid of him :( The apartment owner said if we get just one complaint we can't keep him. Do you think Feliway would help? Please Please Please let me know if you have any ideas or info for me!!

I have 5 cats. I have used Feliway before when taking them to the vet and it has helped tremendously. It is suppose to act like "moms" scent to make them feel safe. I'm sure the little one is missing the other cats. I would definitely try the Feliway before resorting to any kind of medication because with that you just spray it on and around the area that the cat tends to sleep the most. If that doesn't work, you could always invest in a crate that is big enough to hold water and a small litter box. Spray the Feliway on the bedding inside the crate and put the little one in the crate each night.

Good luck and I hope you can keep the kitten.

If the cat meows all the time he is probably jsut adjusting to the new place and people. Get him some toys, and treats. When he meows dont pay attention to him, when he is quite lavish him with attention. If you always go right to him when he meows he learns that meowing gets him attention. Also try treats or comfort food for him.

Feliway I think is used to keep the cat from sratching and clawing at furniture. There is also some pet sedatives that u can get from Petco. I gave it to my cat when we moved. Caution: the cat may meow more if he is uncomfortable wiht hte drug in the beginning.

Good luck!

Wow, your apartment owner sounds so mean. Can you move? I would hate having him for a landlord....Is Feliway that thing that plugs into the wall like a room deodorizer, which is supposed to dispense cat pheromones that people cannot smell, that calms down the cat? It works for my sister's anxious cat. It comes from the pet supply store and I don't know what the name of this product is. Would your cat calm down if one of his friends came to your house along with him?

Okay, what you really need to know is that medicating or sedating this cat isn't the way to go...Your cat is what we refer to as being traumatized by the fact that he is now in a new home with new pets.

It may not be accepted by the cats already residing there so thats why its crying late at night looking for its friends or asking someone for help... Cats are very sensitive and its important that you show this cat extra attention right now love it alot and I mean a lot!!

If possible try to have her sleep with you or close to you so that when the darkness comes, it wont be so afraid and cry for help all the time...Remember they're nocturnal animals so at night they feel as if their in their comfort zone..but if he's crying at night, that means somethings wrong and it needs your help and love immediately.

Picture it like this, your home and everything great for years....then out of nowhere your pulled from your home and end up in some persons apt with strange people you've only known for a week or so...its uncomfortable huh. see it now???

As human beings we are in the position to change things, but this cat knows that you are the one controlling it's destiny so its important that you make it feel comfortable now..You have to make it feel welcomed and that it belongs to your home....

Trust me if you get rid of this cat or just let it be, it can be very detrimental to it and the cats already exsisting in your home. You can stop this now or let it move on and continue this behavioral pattern in the next home it's at until it ultimately passes on.

But you'd be surprised what happens if you decide to show it extra, extra time, love and affection... Good Luck and I hope it all works out in the end for you, you sound like a very concerned and passionate pet owner and people like yourself are rare..

Go Cats!!

Feliway may help some of my clients swear by it others think it doesn't work.
You could also try an anti anxitey medication prescribed by vets called clomicalm, it takes a couple of weeks to kick in but will help the cat in re adjusting.

i know feliway will calm stressed cats, sometimes catnip does too. it could be something like he is not used to the litter tray or type of litter, try distractions like dry cat food hidden around the house to keep him amused. some cats love being groomed which settles them down. he might be used to wandering around at night and wants out. most cats will take a while to settle in.

Poor stressed kitty.

First thing I would do is explain the situation to your neighbours, so they don't complain.

He's probably lonely, and will learn to adapt, but try to keep him close by you at all times. Try not to leave him alone.
