My nephew is going to graduate high school this year and has asked me to help him with career guidance. His parents have informed his school that I will be handling this aspect of his education.

It is really short notice for me. He wants some sort of law enforcement position. Are there colleges for this? Also, he has health issues, he has a pace maker. I realize that he would never be a street cop, but there are many area where this should not be an issue. Do ALL of them have to pass the same health requirements?

If he wants to be involved in law enforcement, he'd better seek a position as you suggested in a non-street environment. If I were calling the shots, I would advise getting into some type of computer support position.
There are a lot of agencies that need people who are computer savvy, and not that many "wanna-be-cops" that are techies. He could probably have a rewarding career in this aspect.
There is also the dispatch option, where he could support the officers by literally telling them "where to go".
Federal law enforcement has analyst positions that might not require attending the physical training requirements of an enforcement type agent also.
The biggest ally he could have other than a clean background and a willingness to learn is education. Put in the classroom time and there's almost no limits to what he can do.
I enjoyed a 21 year career in law enforcement and I had polio as a child. Fortunately I didn't have to wear the leg braces for a real long time, but you never know what you can accomplish.
For me, being a cop was my dream and I was able to achieve it. I truly wish your nephew well, I thank God I was able to do what I always wanted to do and maybe he can enjoy a service career to be proud of. Don't downplay his ambitions, support him like you are now, who knows where he can go?!

These days to get into specific law enforcement jobs, you need to undergo the same application process as any other police officer.
I want to work in the forensic services but still need to serve as a police officer for 3 years or until I've been promoted to Snr Constable.

I think it's best to contact the recruiting services number which is found on the website of your state police.
Don't take my answer as gospel, the recruiting services can answer the questions specifically.
