Mazda 3 or Protiege
Ford Focus
Honda Civic, Prelude

Toyota Celica or 90's Supra
late 80's Nissan 280Z or early 90's 300ZX or Twin Turbo
Mazda RX-7 some years are better than others

Best bet is to pick a few car styles you like and look up in Consumer reports or guide to determine which year of car is recommended.

Good Luck!

Get yourself a late 90's Mazda Miata or Toyota MR2. Both are easy on gas, a ball to drive and can be serviced all most anywhere. The only down side is that they are two passenger cars. If you need four passengers go for a Toyota Celica of the same vintage.

TOYOTA.
I think it would be a crime to choose any other brand. I would suggest a small RAV 4 (but I am not sure it fits with in your budget).
These small 4 wheelers are very funny to drive and give you some four wheel capabilities to expand fun a little bit beyond the common roads.
