Does it make sense to live outside of the city limits to save $$$ on taxes? What do you know about Milwalkee, OR ?

Milwaukee is pretty boring and about 10 mins for downtown Portland. I live in Gresham and it is very nice and outside city limits. Outside the city is very nice but it just depends on what you like.

Milwaukie is one of the cheapest... hence goes with most boring. Though, by bus it's simple to get to dwtn Portland and I prefer the bus over the MAX.

Gresham is ok. You can take the MAX to Portland and it's closer to Mt Hood by 20 - 30 minutes.

Beaverton is more young and professional, so is Hillsboro. Lake Oswego is where the wealthier "families" live.

Clackamas is nice, closer to Mt Hood, like Gresham, but no MAX... it's also a family area.

Gladstone is a family area and just outside Milwaukie.

Seattle is great, too!! But I know more outdoors people in the Portland area. It's easier to get to the ocean beaches, better skiiing and more mountains to climb. Seattle's population is almost double of Portland or thereabouts.

Good luck!

You can access the outdoor activities from almost anywhere in the greater Portland area. Portland IS the outdoors. The far west area is growing quickly and has access to the coast - i.e. Hillsboro, Banks, North Plains, Forest Grove - access in about one to two hours. lThis is in addition to access to the Columbia River (40 min north) and the greater Seattle/Vancouver area (4 hrs north).

Gresham/Troutdale is a good choice--close to the gorge and Mt Hood, and cheaper. And the train will take you right downtown. Hopefully better restaurants and shopping will work its way out here eventually.

Avoid Rockwood, but there are some quite nice places.

Don't move to Oregon. Seattle is a much better place to live. Too much crime in Oregon.
