Martin Luther was a Catholic and he joined the Augustinian order of monks. Why he chose that order and not the Franciscans or another, I don't know. Becoming a monk is a process of learning that can take years. Monks can be brothers, who are not ordained priests, but take vows much as nuns do; or priests and I believe he was an ordained priest. He was also a biblical scholar, which was something only a priest could be in the Catholic Church. It was while he studied the Bible he began to have on problems with church views on different subjects. He apparently decided to enter the monastery to thank God for having been spared when a lightning bolt nearly struck him.

Because he thought he was dedicaded to God, but it ended up he was more dedicated to what was in his pants i.e. seducing a nun that later became his wife.
