Check it out the human race is on the right track.
We have culturally evolved past mystic mumbo jumbo such as polytheism, cannabalism, human sacrafice, blood rituals, and even begun giving women equal rights!!!

Slowly but surely we are losing the trappings from our jungle ancestors. Eventually atheism will be the norm and religous fervor will be secluded to a teenage rebellion activity (like witchcraft is now) and the schizophrenics who talk to invisible people.

As it is know - religion is too steeped in our family and holiday traditions. It get passed on with each new birth.
Notice however, with each generation (even each new pope) it become slightly more diluded, slightly more open minded.

I mean those guys don't burn women at the stake anymore right?
That's a good thing.

It is actually a majority in some European countries. Curiously enough, studies have indicated that those countries with a large atheist population have a higher level of social satisfaction than countries that are very religious.

Well, we can actually look to science on this one.

You see, it's proven that the deepest roots of our personalities is acquired at the youngest of ages. From birth the parents are hauling children to church, threatening with heaven and hell, celebrating the holidays, using all usual terms (god is with you, god intended it, god knows why, etc. etc.) and basically bringing the children up to believe as they themselves were brought up to believe.

The children become adults with their own mind and the ability to make their own decisions, yet most will never really lose what they were brought up to believe, it's more a question of how much of it they believe and how literally they take the scriptures and sermons.

I know few Atheists, but those that I do know were brought up in neutral and nonreligious households. It's a cycle, and like it or not we make fewer decisions in life then we would like to think.

Gee why religious people tend to think that we atheist are angry, sad, hopeless and so on? People we are all human and because we don't believe in a deity that doesn't mean that we come with a switch that turns off the typical emotions related to religion. With that said its true, maybe we atheist are a minority in part because many atheist are afraid to "come out of the closet" because of the intolerance in our countries. Second of all religion is still very linked with political power (at least in my country).

Woooo Nicholas J that was far too ethnocentric. So you still think that indigenous people who live in the jungle are barbarians and uncivilized people that resemble animals instead of people? Talking about evolution pfffff!!!!!!!!

It is in western Europe.

From Wikipedia:
"According to a survey[1] done in 2006, 25% of the Dutch people are Christian, 3% adhere to an other organised religion (Judaism, Islam, Hinduism etc) , 26% are 'unbounded spiritual' (individual spiritual beliefs, agnosts, etc), 26% are non-religious (moderate) humanist and the remaining 18% are non-religious non-humanist."

Because it's not based on fact or reality. The majority of people realize this. I can see a majority of people being agnostic.

Why is Islam the majority in Iran?

because basically, people need someone or thing to blame the bad things that happen to them on. They are unwilling to accept the responsibility for their own lives. You know, the kid you raised, giving him everything he ever asked for turns out to be a sociopathic drug user. That's not YOUR fault, the devil made him that way!
