You can major in English Lit. if you like. Having been part of medical school admission boards, we want top students in their respective field with a varied interest. You must perform well on your required medical school prerequisites (chem, biology, calculus, physics etc) as well as your chosen major.

What you major in doesn't really matter. Major in what you enjoy the most, and where you think you will do the best in grade wise.
The requirements needed to get into med school are relatively few, you can check with the school you are most interested in attending to see what they are. They usually like people to have a degree, because it shows you will stick with a study program. It doesn't have to be a science degree, but those who are science majors generally have an easier time of it.
You will want to have 1-2 years of basic biology, 1 year of regular chemistry, 1 year of organic chemistry, and 1 year of physics. Any classes in biochem, physiology and anatomy, as well as bacteriology, virology, etc will be helpful as well.
Good luck!

Each medical school has a list of requirements. In my opinion, as a biochemistry major and a 4th year medical student, biochemistry is the best major. You will have biochemistry in your first year, and you will need biochemistry to get through pharmacology in the second year. The future of medicine is biochemistry, and it will pay dividends long into your future.
Most faculty also know that a biochemistry major is quite a bit more difficult than biology, and if you excel, that will look great.
