The mayor is the chief executive of a city.

Generally speaking, the mayor is responsible for maintaining public order (police, fire, civil defense, and other such agencies) and for keeping the city physically in good condition (streets & sidewalks, public lighting, bridges, etc.) He/She is generally responsible for collecting city taxes to pay for the above.

Another prime responsibility of a mayor is that of ensuring the economic well-being of the community--that businesses are encouraged to locate and operate in the city so there will be sufficient good-paying jobs.

Sometimes the mayor's duties will include supervision of parks and recreation; clean water supply and sewage disposal; schools, libraries, and education; health care; pollution control and prevention; ports and airports; garbage removal and disposal. Some of these duties may be handled by city departments, while others may be handled by independent governmental agencies. Still others may be handled by private firms, in which case they would probably still be responsible to the mayor.
